Exercise Can Overpower the ‘Obesity Gene’

Nov. 2, 2011 — Obesity may be in your genes, but that is no excuse not to exercise.

In fact, physical activity can reduce the effects of the ‘fat mass and obesity-associated’ (FTO) or obesity gene in adults.

Previous research has shown that about 74% of all people in the U.S. with European ancestry have a genetic variation associated with the FTO gene that can lead to weight gain that raises the risk for becoming obese.

According to the study, the obesity-causing effects of the obesity gene are weakened by 30% when adults are physically active.

The study is published in PLoS Medicine.

“Despite the fact that you have the gene, there are things you can do to prevent it from influencing how heavy you are,” says Louis Aronne, MD, founder and director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Massage has many benefits

Massage is a scientific way to manipulate the body’s soft tissues, which include muscles and ligaments. It increases circulation, which carries away pain-promoting byproducts generated from work or exercise. It relaxes muscles and ligaments. It increases joints’ range of motion.

Massage has been demonstrated to relieve back pain that doesn’t arise from any structural changes to the back. Ten weeks of two massages a week have been shown to improve such back pain.

People ought to seek a therapist who is certified. Many states (I don’t know about provinces) require that massage therapists be licensed.

This doesn’t apply to you, R.G., but it applies to those whose arm or leg is swollen after surgery in which lymph nodes had to be removed.

The benefits of choosing phlebotomy jobs

Phlebotomy jobs are required in a hospital, because they always work around for health professionals such as doctors, surgeons, nurses, and more. The specialist in phlebotomy will have to take blood samples from any person referred to them by a doctor. After blood is collected, labeled and stored safely and properly, it will be sent to a laboratory where it is then analyzed and tested for different types of diseases and foreign elements.
