— A federal judge ordered the government to respond by Tuesday to a legal challenge against a decision to forcibly medicate Arizona shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner in a federal prison.
In the order dated Monday, U.S. District Judge Larry Alan Burns said the government must answer the emergency motion by lawyers representing Loughner that contends forcing him to take mind-altering psychotropic drugs against his will violates his rights.
The lawyers conceded in their motion that they were uncertain if officials at the U.S.

This report assesses how countries are responding to a U.S. Global Health Initiative (GHI) principle to address women, girls and gender equality. The report examines country strategies for seven of the eight “GHI Plus” nations: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Mali, Malawi, and Nepal. (The eighth, Rwanda, has not yet completed its strategy.)
Each country strategy was developed by interagency U.S. government teams in consultation with host country representatives. All seven strategies addressed the health of women and girls as a top priority, and several went further, including efforts to include women and girls as decision-makers and planners in health care programs. My favorite Founding Father, unquestionably, is Benjamin Franklin. I love his pithy quotations. “If you would be loved, love and be loveable.” “To lengthen the life, lessen the meals.” “A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle.”
Franklin was an inventor unafraid to experiment. Remember the kite tied to a key in a lightning storm? He could have killed himself. That’s how much he wanted to know what would happen. If you wear bifocal glasses, you can thank Ben Franklin. When he was 78 years old and struggling with his own vision, he took two pairs of spectacles, split them in half, and made one pair with two strengths of lens.
